Proper waste management

By Rose Mwasya
Hygiene around Kyuso town has recently been a major issue. Immediately one gets to the town, one comes across all kinds of garbage including plastic tins, plastic papers and many more scattered around both residential and business premises. This has left many asking themselves questions concerning parties charged with the responsibility of keeping the town clean.

Residents acknowledge that the rapid growth of the town is attributed to the current challenge. Enterprise developments whereby a large number of people have started small businesses have expanded the town. It is only unfortunate that the authorities concerned have taken small or no measures to check the dumping of garbage.

Esther, a resident at Kyuso town points is irked at carelessness associated with some people who do not dispose wastes in proper places. Many of the residents dispose of their garbage anywhere they wish be it along the streets, roads and even within market premises without minding about the consequences.

John, a carpenter however has a different opinion. He associates this problem with neglect by the authorities concerned. The county authority has not taken any steps to control the menace.  There seems to be no clear policy for the workers who have been given the responsibility to clean the town in order to guide them on how to discharge their duties.

According to a worker responsible for cleaning the town, residents here should be responsible of their own wastes. This is mainly because they carelessly dispose them off instead of disposing them at designated places provided for by the local authority. However, those designated areas have not been well established.

The issue of sewage system is also another area which county governments should focus on. Pit latrines have serious health implications when they are full. The sewage drainage system therefore needs to be established to avoid spread of disease causing organisms.
