By Fridah Muli
Jua Kali industry has been the fastest growing industry in Kyuso. Surprisingly not many people seem to note its relevance to economic growth of the area, yet this sector is very beneficial to Kyuso residents.

The Kyuso people benefit greatly from this industry in terms of household commodities an estimate of 90% of household utilities are products of the juakali industry. Most of these commodities are in high demand, a fact that has facilitated its growth.

The industry has generated income to the unemployed youths and people of Kyuso. Although it is a hand to mouth kind of venture, it has had a huge impact in the lives of people of this area.

Growing young talents have been nurtured to careers that are more useful. Apprenticeship has been a major mode of acquiring skills and also sharpening existing abilities. Do you think you have a ‘sleeping’ manual talent? Just hook up with this industry and you may never regret!

Following the creativity of these individuals, life has been made even cheaper in this region. Juakali artisans have breathed life to items that could otherwise have been thrown away by the owners. These items are availed in the market at amazingly low prices.

This kind of job only need more energy and less capital since it is made up of small-scale units. Production is manual and machinery is less expensive, thus people of this region have opted to employ their skills using their hands to earn a living.

The people of Kyuso have accepted the fact that our current Kenyan economy cannot support blue-collar jobs for the entire population and thus there is a giant informal sector of expertise- the juakali field.

This complex yet simple model of business offers insights into the economic reality of Kyuso and the employment that so many rely on day in day out. Government through the line ministry has shown great support to juakali sector. A piece of land has been set aside and a great construction has kicked off where all juakali workshops will be taking place in Kyuso town.
